We will be reading and discussing a selection from In Parenthesis, by David Jones, first published in 1937. In Parenthesis has been described as “the greatest poem of World War I”.

In a note of introduction, T.S.Eliot described it as “a book about the experiences of one soldier in the War of 1914. It is also a book about War, and about many other things, such as Roman Britain, the Arthurian Legend, and divers matters which are given association by the mind of the writer”.

It is not easy to read, but once you get into it it is strangely immersive, enabling us to share in a way no other poem could something of the experience of our forefathers who took part in “The Great War”

If you are interested, I strongly recommend that you attempt to read the whole book
