Art Appreciation

Status:Active, open to new members
Convener:
When: On Thursday mornings
2nd Thursday monthly
Venue: Varies - TBA

We meet on the second Thursday of the month, usually at 10.30am, at a gallery for either a guided tour, talk or a visit with notes prepared by a member of the group, followed by an optional informal discussion and coffee!

To be a member of the group you need no knowledge of Art History or Art – just interest and a desire to learn!

Prior to the pandemic, we visited Turner at the Tate with a pre-exhibition talk. We had many fascinating guided tours at the National Gallery, including Encoded Messages, Dramatic Story-telling and Early Renaissance Italian Painting. We visited the Courtauld Gallery, for the Impressionists and the Rodin and Dance exhibition and have familiarised ourselves with the Roccoco and admired Bonington at the Wallace Collection.

In 2021 the group managed 3 good visits at the end of the year: Tate Britain (a private tour) Queens Gallery, Greenwich (Woburn treasures) and Courtauld Gallery (recently reopened after extensive refurbishment).

The group also regularly visits the Estorick Gallery, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Henry Moore Collection at Perry Green, the Serpentine Gallery and many more.

See below for our provisional list of planned visits (which start at 10:30 unless otherwise indicated):
